Virtualbox and extensions versions have not changed This only seems to happen on my Kali VM and it's happen twice in the past 6 months.VM boots fine after reverting back to the snapshot or crashes in someway with a hardware related error. This is why I suspect it's a booting issue and not a hard drive issue. I tried reverting to a recent snapshot but this caused the VM to behave strangely (see screenshot of root terminal) and eventually go back to the black screen after about a minute. This resulted in a weird error as shown in the attached screenshot everytime I load the VM. After a while of it being like this, I force powered off the VM and tried to restart it. However, the screen blacked out after about 30 seconds but the VM windows didn't crash or close. This is expected as I was running BurpSuite, Android Studio and a couple of other somewhat intensive programs in the background. I was running the VM fine until I tried to open Firefox, whereupon it began to lag. I am currently encountering an error whereupon the guest Kali Linux VM corrupts itself on startup.
